In a world that revolves around the collection, interpretation, and visualization of data, the need for visually compelling, interactive dashboards has never been as great as it is today. Institutional researchers, evaluators and stakeholders are increasingly eager to drill into their data and quickly extrapolate meaning from a clear visualization. While other popular BI-tools offer an exciting opportunity to create dynamic data dashboards, there are frequent impediments to their use and adoption such as cost, data reshaping, learning curve, familiarity.

Building on the skills learned in the Beginner Session, the Advanced Session will take your dashboards to the next level. Shelly and Tom will share best practices in dashboard design to make your dashboards really pop. They will also teach you how to incorporate inferential statistics (e.g., t-tests) in your dashboard that update as you slice and dice your data. In this course, you will learn "smart" visualizations that your clients will be asking "how'd you do that?".

You will learn:

  • Best practices in designing your dashboards to maximize impact
  • Four effective dashboard layout techniques
  • Advanced features in Excel to customize your dashboards for various stakeholders
  • How to integrate inferential statistics (e.g. t-tests) into your dashboards

Prerequisites:

  • Knowledge of both PivotTables and Slicers in Excel is required (consider taking the beginner workshop on August 20th to get caught up!)

System Requirements:

Please make sure that you are using Excel 2010 or a more recent version for the workshop. Older versions of Excel do not include the built-in features needed to generate an interactive dashboard. (We will be using Excel 2016 for the workshop.) Mac users should be fine as well, as long as you are not using a very old version of Excel.
