In a world that revolves around the collection, interpretation, and visualization of data, the need for visually compelling, interactive dashboards has never been as great as it is today. Institutional researchers, evaluators and stakeholders are increasingly eager to drill into their data and quickly extrapolate meaning from a clear visualization. While other popular BI-tools offer an exciting opportunity to create dynamic data dashboards, there are frequent impediments to their use and adoption such as cost, data reshaping, learning curve, familiarity.

The Beginner Session takes you through all you need to design interactive dashboards in Excel and Google Sheets. Shelly and Tom will provide you with practical, hands-on, step-by-step instructions to turn your static data into a dynamic dashboard that will “wow” your stakeholders. They will demonstrate Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts, and Slicers to create well-designed dashboards that your stakeholders can use to slice-and-dice data in seconds. You will leave the workshop with clear steps that you can immediately implement to create stunning dashboards that are pliable and easy to reproduce.

You will learn:

  • How to use PivotTables, PivotCharts, and Slicers to create interactive dashboards
  • Quick visualization tips and tricks to customize your dashboards for stakeholders
  • How to secure your dashboard using built-in protection features
  • Different chart types to display data in the most meaningful way

Prerequisites:

  • Basic knowledge of Excel (e.g., charts, basic formulas)
  • PivotTable knowledge is helpful, but not necessary

System Requirements:

Please make sure that you are using Excel 2010 or a more recent version for the workshop. Older versions of Excel do not include the built-in features needed to generate an interactive dashboard. (We will be using Excel 2016 for the workshop.) Mac users should be fine as well, as long as you are not using a very old version of Excel.
