Welcome our 2023 President!

December 2022

Dear Seattle Evaluation Association Members,

It is with great excitement that I am writing to introduce you to the 2023 President of the Association, Landon Charlo! I will stay on as the Past-President for the next year and I am looking forward to collaborating with him. The Leadership Team is beyond excited to have Landon on board and I know that EvalSeattle will flourish under his leadership.

We are planning a few events in early 2023 to allow everyone to meet Landon but in the meantime you can check out his bio below.

Meet Landon Charlo!

Landon is in his final year of the Ph.D. program in Educational Psychology at Washington State University. He is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation in western Montana. His dissertation is focused on developing and conceptualizing an Indigenous Evaluation Framework to help further practice and policy decisions. Landon is interested in all aspects of evaluation and is looking forward to starting his career next summer. Currently as part of his graduate assistantship, Landon is an evaluator for a USDA funded summer internship program (Phenomics Big Data Management) at WSU and is enjoying his first experiences in the practice of evaluation. Over the next year he is intent on learning data visualization principles and software which he believes helps to materialize the flow of data into an object of zeal for the users of an evaluation, thus furthering utilization and recommendations. As the incoming President he is very grateful to the community of evaluators and applied researchers who are members of the Seattle Evaluation Association. He is committed to continuing the excellence exhibited by previous leadership teams and plans to provide learning, networking, and socializing opportunities for EvalSeattle.

Happy Spring from EvalSeattle! We’ve had a whirlwind of events recently, including 18 Evalu-dates and an amazing presentation on retrospective impact evaluation with Jane Davidson and Thomaz Chianca. Thanks to everyone who helped make these events successful!

We’re looking forward to more exciting events this year, including a chance to Spring Clean Your Business with the Independent Consultant’s Meet-up and our first in-person happy hour in two years. We hope you’ll be able to join us to say hello and reconnect in person after so much time online. Check out the events section below to RSVP.

Also, we still have a few open positions available on the EvalSeattle Leadership Team! We are actively looking for interested individuals to join us in the following roles: President-Elect, Financial Officer, and Communications Officer. Email president@evalseattle.org for more info.

Hi everyone, Happy New Year and welcome to 2022! While 2021 didn’t go quite the way any of us were hoping for, EvalSeattle has a number of things to be proud of and thankful for, and I’m already feeling better about 2022 after reading Vu Le’s new year post below. Thanks for being part of our community at the start of this year – we’re looking forward to providing you with great opportunities in 2022 for community-building and professional development.

Our Commitment to Antiracism

George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Nina Pop, Ahmaud Arbery, Manuel Ellis, and countless other Black people deserve justice. Amidst a pandemic that is rapidly taking Black lives and economic collapse that is threatening the survival of countless Black-led organizations, the systemic racism that was built and reinforced over centuries is undeniable. The systemic devaluing and dehumanizing of Black lives that leads to death, trauma, and despair must end. It is incumbent on all of us to not just fight for Black lives, but to fight for Black liberation.

The Seattle Evaluation Association is in the process of deciding the many actions we will take to actively promote antiracism, dismantle white supremacy and policing, and champion BIPOC evaluators. We welcome your input (email us at evalseattle@gmail.com) and we will update everyone as our work evolves.

Here’s where we are already clear:

Black lives matter. Black women’s lives matter. Black trans lives matter.
We stand in solidarity with activists and protesters demanding justice.
We reject narratives that focus on the destruction of property to undermine righteous anger and the necessary pressure to realize change. We condemn structural racism in all its forms—and we know that we have not yet centered antiracism in our organization. We invite you to keep us accountable as we commit to do better.
We will use both our organizational power and our platforms to actively promote antiracism in the practice of evaluation and in our communities, amplify Black evaluators and other Black voices speaking out on these issues, and partner with Black people in the communities where we live and work.

Beyond these statements, we must commit ourselves to action. As a first step, we encourage you to read and use the resources:
